7 signs your car needs a mechanic — Mackay driver’s checklist

Know the warning signs early

Mackay’s mix of salt air, long highway runs to Brisbane, and corrugated back roads is tough on vehicles. Here are the seven signs that mean it’s time to book your car in — and why ignoring them usually costs more.

1. Grinding or squealing brakes

Pad material wears thin and the backing plate starts scoring the rotor. A $250 pad replacement becomes an $800 rotor-and-pad job if left.

2. The dashboard Christmas tree

Check-engine, ABS or airbag lights aren’t background noise. A diagnostic scan at any auto electrician takes 15 minutes and is often free or under $100.

3. Fluid under the car

Oil (brown/black), coolant (green/pink), transmission fluid (red) or brake fluid (clear amber) — any of them means something is leaking that shouldn’t be.

4. Vibration through the steering wheel

Usually unbalanced wheels or warped rotors. Easy fixes if caught early.

5. Smoke from the exhaust

Blue = burning oil. White = coolant or (harmless) condensation. Black = rich fuel mixture. All three need attention.

6. Drop in fuel economy

A 10%+ drop usually means dirty injectors, a failing O2 sensor, or underinflated tyres.

7. Unusual noises

Ticking, knocking, whining or clunking — all diagnostic by ear for an experienced mechanic. Record it on your phone if possible.

Book a local Mackay mechanic early. It’s almost always cheaper than waiting.
